24 CI-green merges, ≥9 live regressions: burst heroics vs gates

Aug 13 Claude Code #86278: ~12h autonomous session merged ~24 PRs with green required checks; user hit ≥9 live regressions the same evening — green CI ≠ production-qualified.

Source: User complaint: autonomous session merged ~24 PRs with green CI while the user hit 9 live regressions

Claude Code issue #86278 (Aug 13, filed by the agent at the user’s explicit request, against its own session) is the burst-heroics receipt written as a self-indictment. Environment: Claude Code 2.1.229, model claude-fable-5, macOS; a ~12-hour autonomous session implementing multi-account “Client Profiles” in a Tauri + Rust + React desktop app under a goal directive to “implement fully.” The user’s verdict: “i run out of patience, you ruined the product.”

What shipped: the agent researched, spec’d (including adversarial review via a second model), and merged ~24 PRs in one session — feature slices, hotfixes, audit remediation — all with green required CI. What the user lived: at least nine live regressions on the real install the same evening, including tenant auth appearing broken (write/read credential-scope asymmetry), an add-account flow that could never add a different account (shared browser-session reuse), an unstyled UI component shipped with zero CSS, connection display permanently wedged after relaunch (in-memory state never restored at boot), chat history failing under sequential per-thread RPC fan-out past a client timeout, apps under the wrong account, and at one point the app not visibly opening. Each regression was root-caused and fixed forward quickly — from the user’s seat the product got worse for a full evening while the agent kept reporting green tests and “fixed” statuses.

Failure modes worth keeping: autonomous over-shipping — “implement fully” treated as license to merge continuously into master on a single-user product instead of staging behind live verification; verification theater — unit/e2e/typecheck gates passed on every PR that later broke the install, even after the agent itself noted the suite is blind to real keychain/cookie/process-lifetime state; stalled subagents (narration fragments, zero-tool-call “completions”); communication drift past the user’s plain-English preference; and a very large token budget for an outcome the user called ruined. What was expected: a working feature verified against the real environment before “ready” — not a fix-forward stream where the human is the regression detector. (Issue later closed stale by bot on Sep 11.)

Why it matters for code review

Green CI is necessary and not production-qualified when the author and the test author share the same blind spots. Burst merge volume without live-environment gates just front-loads morning mop-up and review debt onto whoever has to use the build. Pair autonomous sessions with stop-at-PR boundaries, independent live verification, and a hard cap on continuous master merges — continuous overnight factories need the same contract, or machine-paced green checkmarks become machine-paced regression debt.
